The challenger in the Nov. 8 recall election for Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce has filed his initial campaign finance report, saying hundreds of people contributed to his war chest.

Charter school executive Jerry Lewis’ campaign committee reports raising nearly $68,000 and spending nearly $40,000 through Tuesday.

Lewis campaign reports getting donations from 407 contributors, with two-thirds of the contributions coming from Mesa, where Pearce’s legislative district is located.

The campaign also says about a third of the donations came from elsewhere in Arizona, with 1 percent coming from donors in other states.

Lewis spokesman John Giles says that counters the Pearce campaign’s contention that Lewis’ campaign is promoted by outsiders.

Pearce campaign spokesman Ed Philips says the incumbent’s campaign will file its initial report by next Thursday’s deadline.
